Silly questions

beep-beep

Watch out!! Noobscooter coming through!!

So I recently picked up Savage Worlds and the RunePunk setting, and am going to be playing in a game via Wave. However, I am having some problems. I am kinda confused in character creation.

Once I pick a race, then I adjust my stats (5 points to raise d4-d6-d8, etc). Once that is done, I pick my skills (15 points to raise skills d4-d6-d8, etc, 2 points when it gets above related stat). And then I pick edges and hinderences, and this is where the confusion comes in.

I see a bunch of edges, and then I see professional edges, and then I see, in the RunePunk book, a bunch of professions. I understand that if I want edges at creation, I need to take some hinderences to balance them out. However, what is the difference between an edge and a professional edge? A professional edge and a profession?

To give an idea of where I want to go, here is my eventual goal for a character. He is not one of the more subtle creatures out there. He would rather go through the door than take the time to figure out how to bypass the lock. His idea of diplomacy is using the flat of his blade rather than the edge. Machinery of any sort makes him really, really uncomfortable, and the feeling is, to be honest, rather reciprocal, or so it appears because they often stop functioning when he tries to use them.

I saw in the RunePunk rules that the Malakar race might be ideal for this.

So here is how I see building Garraok

Stats
Agility - d6 (1)
Smarts - d4 (0)
Spirit - d6 (1)
Strength - d8 (2)
Vigor - d6 (1)

Skills
Climbing - d6 (1)
Fighting - d8 (3)
Guts - d8 (3)
Intimidation - d8 (3)
Throwing - d6 (1)
Tracking- d8 (4)

And then comes to picking edges, which is where I start getting confused. I think that I automatically get all of the innate edges and hinderences for the Malakar. If I want more, I assume that I need to take additional hinderences?? I was looking at taking All thumbs and Outsider, but it seems like those are already included because of his innate hinderences, so I was thinking of Illiterate and Mean (2 points).

What are my limitations on edges? Do I have any?

Thanks

(Thanks to Kristian on Twitter for pointing me to the forums.)

I think I have it figured out,. Is this right??

Innate Edges - Claws (+2 runic damage), Dark Heritage (+2 resist magic, +2 Armor vs Magic, immune runestorms), Inhuman Constitution (+2 vs poisons/toxins)

Innate Hinderences - Born of Chaos (-2 Repair, roll of 1 causes malfunction), Shunned (-2 CHA vs non-Malakar)

Edges - Brawny (+1 Toughness, 8xStr load limit)

Hinderences - Mean (-2 Cha), Illiterate

Charisma = -4

Parry = 6

Toughness = 6

Welcome to the forums, mudbunny! I think I can answer most of your character creation questions, and hopefully Sean will stop by to answer the questions specific to RunePunk.

You've got the attributes right. All attributes start at d4 and you buy points to increase them. If a race starts with a higher die in a given attribute, then you start with that higher die of course.

Skills are slightly different. You start off with no die in any skills, and you spend a skill point to get a d4 and 2 points for a d6 (assuming that the associated attribute is a d6 or higher).

Edges have different subcategories: Background Edges, Combat Edges, Professional Edges, Wild Card Edges, Leadership Edges, Power Edges, Social Edges, and Weird Edges. A Professional Edge is the closest thing you'll see to a class in Savage Worlds. Professional Edges usually grant a unique ability or boost specific skills associated with a certain archetypal character and require a set of skills and edges associated with that character concept.

A profession is just a reference to a professional edge.

Hope that helps!

OOO, th skill thing is gonna change things then.

Gonna need to go back and recalculate my skill. I was starting them off from a d4, not buying a d4.

Looks good to me. Check with your GM about guts. Not every campaign uses that skill.
