Welcome to the Next Level

Or something like that. I’m blasting a music medley of MTV’s first day of visual and audio assaults from back in the day (courtesy of ShareMyPlaylist and Spotify). Life is strange. I’m largely doing what I’ve done since my preteen years–messing around with computers, gorging on pop culture, reading randomly with a purpose, writing in all the in-between times. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Sure. Some things have changed. Friends have drifted away. New bonds have been forged. Technology presses on. Instead of 8 tracks and cassette tapes, we have discs (for a while, yet) and streaming everything.

I recall a conversation about a decade ago with a friend wherein we discussed that we’re likely the last generation with the same sense of ownership the next one will have. The world, it is a changing. I’m largely okay with just using stuff randomly thrown my way. Netflix works for me. As does Spotify. I get a lot more variation than if I had to throw all the money it would actually cost to buy all those tunes and own all those flicks.

With digital materials, boundaries get blurry anyway. It’s remarkable to get up and see what new, strange thing, awaits us. I just got around to really watching FRINGE, and I loved it when Walter said something to the effect. “I have no idea. What fun would that be?”

And I have to believe, as I fumble upon my new computer with an operating system I know only tangentially through exposure to iOS, that sometimes not knowing is not only good for us, but can actually be stimulating and fun.

Until next time, I bid you, dear reader, adieu!
