Recursive Writing and Going Out of Bounds

May 24th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

I’m happy to announce, with the encouragement of Michael Wolf of Stargazer’s World, Reality Blurs is now part of the RPG Blog Alliance.  The website is a nice aggregate and you can visit there to get a snippet of what we’ve got going on along with a nice sampling of a lot of really great blogs. I’m absolutely honored to be in such great company, and want to thank Michael for making it dangerously easy to get set up with them. Today’s post is called recursive writing as this is the first post which will run through the RPGBA and [...]

First Monday of May: Concerning Canon & Confidence

May 2nd, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

As you may have noted by my absence of dialogue yesterday, my daily run has run its course. I sustained DBloC for six straight months and it was indeed an endurance race, at least at first. After the first few months, I developed my voice and the direction I wanted to take this column. Part of this was being more open, but not entirely open. I jokingly called another fella’s pseudo-informational tweet today semi-transparent, and I suppose I am to some degree. While I don’t mind talking about some things quite openly 1 other things need to simmer awhile longer. [...]

The Shape of a Day

Apr 5th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

A lot of you reading this have a regular routine with a few deviations here and there. For the most part, it’s no different for me. Despite working from home, I get up early and go through a regular routine too. For those who think writing or game design is fun and easy, you’re way off. While there is definitely a hearty degree of fun, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. As an example, I’m going to give you an abbreviated snapshot of how my day went today. I got up, checked email, checked our project management system, [...]

Project Updates

Mar 27th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

Over the last week, we’ve had a chance to see the state of various projects. The first Iron Dynasty adventure shall be coming out in a few days, and April looks like it will make a strong showing with the planned continuation of Old School Fantasy, RunePunk, and a few other surprises for you. I’ll be starting to unveil more as things make their way through layout, but as it stands we should have a lot of goodness coming your way shortly. I’ll level with you–I intended to update this earlier today and really talk about some juicy rules stuff, [...]

Saturday Evening Post

Mar 26th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

Today has been largely a lazy day wherein I’ve been playing word games on the Nook Color as well as exploring emulators for GBA as well. It’s interesting to note, how many people have been looking back nostalgically towards past games and there has been quite a movement towards Old School gaming. Heck, even we enjoy the old stuff as evident from our Old School Fantasy line. When one looks at the past, one cannot help but look towards the future as well. To whit, I find it interesting how some individuals have brought up in various discussions of late [...]

Friday Has Fallen

Mar 25th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

Today, I spent some time playing with prose, dancing with words, and generally making merry with my imagination this fine Friday. The heavy lifting was done earlier this week, and we’re on track for the first Iron Dynasty supplemental release next week, so strap on your katanas and get ready. Go forth, have fun, and expect a larger dollop of knowledge on the morrow. I’ve got some ideas, but my stomach is growling so it’s time to go! Until next time, I bid you, dear reader, adieu!

Lay of the Land and Future Plans

Mar 21st, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

Today, I’ve spent a goodly amount of time reacquainting myself with the subtle nuances of layout software. While I’ve had my hand in the layout and design of all our projects to one degree or another, such as selecting fonts, mocking up the covers, or even doing all the bits myself, I’ll admit it’s been awhile, but I’m looking forward to getting more involved with this particular aspect of the workflow, at least for awhile. That’s not to say I’ll be handling all the layout myself, but if I’m handling this part of the process, it should eliminate some of [...]

Android Analysis and the Future of Gaming

Mar 20th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

With the untimely passing of my second Blackberry, I took the leap and got an Android phone, the Galaxy Samsung S. The reason for the shift, more than anything else, was the exposure to Android I received when I got my Nook Color. The resistance to getting one of these touchscreen phones to begin with was the fact I’m a bit old fashioned when it comes to data entry. I am a touch typist and the fact my fingers would just go roaming across the screen with no traction was a bit off-putting. When you get a new phone from [...]

Campaign Lessons Courtesy of Spartacus

Mar 13th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

Today (and the bulk of yesterday), I spent watching Spartacus, a rousing good show with a surprising depth of intrigue, far more than I expected from glancing at the little blurb. I figured it was a series “inspired” by the like of Gladiator, and I wasn’t far wrong–at least on the surface. Once things get going, there is a lot of good stuff going on. There are lessons to be learned by such a tight focus. Let’s hit a few things and all get used to the time change, shall we? Keep the motivation strong. Our hero wants to survive [...]

Word Murder: Edit Until Your Keyboard Runs Red

Mar 11th, 2011 | By | Category: The Razorwise Report

When one dusts off a manuscript one hasn’t touched directly for a number of years, there are oddities associated with it. You may approach it with the friendliness of a long-lost love—nice but not to familiar–and with a certain air of anticipation mixed with dread. It’s also entirely different from something you already have out there. While printed form is inflexible, a manuscript is still a pool of possibility. You owe it to yourself and to your audience to make it the best you can. You may moan and groan at the clumsiness of your writing–an awkward phrase here and [...]
