Adventures in Real Life
When you set your own hours, you have certain advantages and disadvantages, obligations, annoyances, and all the other jazz every who works a “normal” job has (with one exception). Your precious, precious hours are often perilously considered by others to be open and available. Certainly, you’re not doing anything while watching that movie, listening to that song, or playing that game. And staring off into space? Certainly, you’re just avoiding doing any “real” work. Am I right?
For most “normal” folks, the creative endeavor is a mystical or quasi-mystical thing at best, intangible, ephemeral, and only those things concrete and solid are real (and this is despite the transient nature of technology and the strange spaces of ownership over bits and pieces). There must be words on paper (or at least filling up text documents) or notes scattered about and you must be typing away or no real work is done.
Fortunately for me, over the years, the people closest to me have come to understand my process and largely respect my time. There are instances, however, when my time is taken for granted, and so it sometimes remains a bit of respecting my own time, space, and place.
On the flip side of things, I am able to get out into the stores and the streets during the off-peak times of day and largely take care of tasks without bumping up against the morass of the masses (whom work far more normal hours than I do). Today was one of those days where I attended to some personal matters. Don’t envy me. I certainly shall be working some random, odd hours while you enjoy some eventual evening. All of us, no matter our circumstance, must find a sense of balance, and get things done and, most of all, respect our time.
Speaking of which, I appreciate you checking in on the RWR. The shape of things allows me to resume these words for the foreseeable future. And, I predict more words (both here and elsewhere), from yours truly, shall be out there with scary regularity.
Until next time, I bid you, dear reader, adieu!
